The government has launched a ground breaking strategy designed to better protect children against misogyny and abuse, aiming to halve violence against women and girls over the next decade.
The Violence Against Women and Girls (V
AWG) Strategy which launched on 18th December quoted several devastating statistics.
In 2024, 1 in every 8 women was a victim of domestic abuse, sexual assault or stalking; and that 40% of teenagers are in an abusive dating relationship.
The plans include:
- challenging misogyny and promoting healthy relationships in schools and through public campaigns
- using specialist rape and sexual assault teams in every police force to catch perpetrators
- better support for victims and survivors
By 2029, GPs across the England will be able to refer patients affected by violence and abuse to specialist care services. There will also be up to £50 million for support for child victims of sexual abuse.
Up until now, the NHS has often had first eyes on victims of domestic and child sexual abuse, but not enough routes to directly support them. These changes will help victims and survivors get the support and treatment they need.
This is the largest crackdown on violence perpetrated against women and girls in British history. Please go to the government’s website to read the full strategy.
