Bengali Women Diabetes Report Now Published

We are proud to have now published our report into Bengali Women’s experience of diabetes in Camden.

Diabetes is the second most common long-term condition in Camden. But it is especially problematic among Asian ethnic groups.

We wanted to find out how to improve services in Camden for Bengali women with diabetes and spoke to over 60 women about their experiences.

What Did Local Women Tell Us?

Stigma There can be a cultural misconception in the Bengali community that diabetes is a result of being “greedy“. “Everyone is embarrassed to say they have diabetes…”

Nurturer The woman’s role of nurturer of family and home can leave little time for self care. “We are expected to manage the household…which…leaves us less time to look after ourselves.”

Privacy is important Camden needs more free and affordable women-only exercise and swimming classes. As mixed classes can be off-putting. “Only women facilities are hard to find…”

Walking Wins When asked “What types of physical activities do you feel most comfortable doing?”, most women said they preferred walking. “(avoids) embarrassment from others watching me exercise”.

Management of Diabetes Must be Integrated with Spiritual Life For example, specific medical advice would be helpful around how to manage long-acting insulin around a fasting schedule. “Ramadan – difficult to manage medication at optimum times.”

What Support Is Out There Now?

There is already a variety of support out there in Camden which may be of help to you or a friend or family member who is diabetic or pre-diabetic. This leaflet, in Bengali, tells you about local NHS services for diabetics in Camden, Bengali – NHS Healthier You Service Patient Leaflet.

Or, why not check out Camden Council’s regular organised walks. They are relaxed and friendly, and at each of the walks, there are toilets and benches along the route.

Plus many of the walks also finish at cafes so members have a chance to socialise and chat.

Each group meets 10 minutes before the walk starts and leaves promptly. Walks typically last 30-90 minutes. No specialist equipment is needed, just wear clothes and shoes comfortable for walking! For more information, to sign up or even set up your own group, email walking@camden.gov.uk or visit Camden Wellbeing Walks.
